Audio and Video from Selected Mugwumpin Performances

This Is All I Need (2010): Mugwumpin digs through closets and cupboards to untangle and retangle the threads connecting our hearts, our anxieties, and our stuff.  We explore these connections from numerous angles, from the ways that our belongings become physical repositories for our most potent memories, to the fine boundaries between collecting and hoarding, to the psychosocial motors driving the contemporary urge to accumulate.  At the start of this clip, Madeline struggles with her desire to own an abandoned cinema and reshape it to her own purposes. Performed by Madeline H.D. Brown, Joseph Estlack, Erin Mei-Ling Stuart, and Christopher W. White; directed by Liz Lisle and Jonathan Spector.

I Have This ________. [Possessional Confessional] (2010): Our first ever Occurrence, or performance created for non-theatrical spaces.  This performance instillation invites viewers to share information about one of their prized possessions.  In return for their confessions, we offer them advice, atonement, or acclamation.  Conceived by Mugwumpin member Madeline H.D. Brown, performed by Brown, Joe Estlack, and Christopher W. White, with facilitation from Julia Lynton.

365 Days/365 Plays by Suzan-Lori Parks (2007): Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks spent a year writing a short play each day. Theater companies around the US participated in performing them all in 2007. Mugwumpin decided to produce our week of plays by having a party at Root Division gallery in San Francisco, at which seven directors would cast their plays with guests, rehearse, and then perform.

super:anti:reluctant (2006): An exploration of notions of the American Hero and their effects on society and the individual.  We drew inspiration from comic books, the mythology of the Wild West, and Kerri Strug's one-legged, gold-medal-winning vault in the 1996 Olympics.

Video clips:

Your Nightgown Is Jealous When You Dream (2005): Inspired by a 17th-century Chinese ghost tale, this piece follows a wandering musician negotiating the love of two women, one living and the other a spirit.  Original music by Mugwumpin Artistic Director Christopher W. White, performed by Chris and Maiya Murphy. Recorded and mixed by Patrick Mendoza.
